“The Fighting Irish”
150 years ago on September 17, 1862, the Union and Confederate armies met at Sharpsburg, Maryland, in the Battle of Antietam. New York’s 69th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, part of Brigadier General Thomas F. Meagher’s “Irish Brigade,” was ordered to assault the Confederate center. The brigade’s attack gave other troops enough time to flank and break the Confederate position. Future costly engagements would earn the unit its nickname “The Fighting 69th.” This is the official return of men killed, wounded, and missing from the 69th during the battle.
