Treasury Warrant in the Amount of $7.2 Million for the Purchase of Alaska, 08/01/1868

On August 1, 1868, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia with this check for $7.2 million. For less than 2 cents an acre, the United States acquired nearly 600,000 square miles.  Alaska would become the 49th state on January 3, 1959.
