“An act making an alteration in the Flag of the United States”
Approved by President George Washington on January 13, 1794, this act called for the Flag of the United States to have fifteen stripes and  fifteen stars, reflecting the admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the  Union.  Faced with the admission of five more states in 1818, the flag  design would return to the original thirteen stripes.

“Home of George Hoskins, his wife and ten children. This is a three room house renting for $6.75 monthly; the family has an electric refrigerator, washing machine, an iron, and pay $4.12 monthly for electricity; Mr. Hoskins said, ‘We’ve lived in this house for eleven years, and it has leaked for eleven years.’ Coleman Fuel Company, Red Bird Mine, Field, Bell County, Kentucky, 08/31/1946”

Dated August 31, 1946, this photograph was taken by Russell W. Lee as part of a survey of medical, health and housing conditions in coal mining communities.
